I watched the premiere...it reminded me of one of my gripes I have about Mario Lopez as a person. In some past interviews, I would always be surprised to hear Mario speak with an accent. Slater never spoke with an accent...but I suppose that Mario is Latino, so I let it slide (even though it still threw me off).
My annoyance comes because I had COMPLETELY forgotten about Mario having an accent due to his superb hosting of America's Best Dance Crew. He NEVER uses an accent, and I really had forgotten that he had ever used one outside of acting. In Saved by the Baby, Mario goes in and out of his accent so often that if I blindfolded someone in my apartment (not that I would ever do that... ...), I could convince them that two different people were talking.
When Mario is speaking straight to the camera, he uses his "acting" voice. When he is speaking to his girlfriend, however, he often uses his accented voice. It was frustrating for two reasons. First, I found it really distracting. Second, Mario is on a reality show about HIS life. He has invited cameras and anyone who receives Vh1 into his home, life, and relationship. If he isn't comfortable enough to be himself (read: speak with his accent), then how will he ever gain trust or loyalty from his viewership?
Mario, just because I forgot you had an accent doesn't mean I don't like your natural accent. It is not thick by any means or hard to understand. Also, please stop calling ol' girl Masa; it's surprisingly annoying (made more annoying by saying that you didn't like her name because it wasn't Italian enough).
When I wasn't being distracted by Mario going in and out of his accent, I was being appalled by his views on left-handed girls. He said he felt that women being left-handed automatically made them seem more masculine. Mario, I have no idea how this idea was ever introduced into your
All Mario Lopez bashing aside, I still got mad love for A.C. Slater. Again, I promise I'll be analyzing his style soon!
